BASIC GRADING INSTRUCTIONS
MINT MARK LOCATIONS, if you do not know where the Mint Mark is on your coin, see the section below the basic grading instructions towards the bottom of this page..
Some coins are in such bad condition that they demand very little if any above face value. I supply this basic coin information free, to save you from spending $20 on a Coin Grading book, and $10 on a Coin Price list book The value of any given coin depends not solely, but mostly, upon condition, which numismatists (coin collectors) call Grade. Coins which have been spent are called "CIRCULATED". Circulated coins vary in condition in eight assigned levels with different numerical variations of each (AG-3 to AU-55, see grading terms below). Mint condition coins are called, "MINT STATE", "MS" or "UN-CIRCULATED". Mint condition (MS) coins also have a numerical scale to describe slight variations in the quality and charectoristics of each individual coin.
The following list explains very basic coin grade features. Match your coin or collection to this list of coin features to determine approximate grade. This is very basic coin grading info., if your coin does well in this basic grading area you may wish to request Advanced Grading instructions, which will be explained below.

BASICCOIN CONDITION DETERMINATION INSTRUCTIONS (There is an individual set of instructions for each type of U.S. Coins. TO access the advanced coin condition determination instructions for each type of U.S. coin there is a $2 fee, you save $32 as books you order will cost at least $34, this is your best bet!)

BASIC COIN CONDITION DETERMINATION INSTRUCTIONS (be sure to click the link above for the advanced condition determination area, detailed instructions for specific U.S. coins in the advanced area) CULL=JUNK The absolute lowest coin grade is called Cull. Most Cull coins are not collectible, you can not tell what type of coin it is, Cull= worthless unless precious metal for example: bronze, silver or gold etc. or in very rare instances, a Very rare coin may be desirable to a very few collectors.

AG3= ABOUT GOOD AG or About Good, is the lowest collectible grade or coin condition. You can tell what kind of coin it is, may not have a date, no rim, will have only a trace of the main design, design might not be outlined and will be worn nearly flat on a coin in the grade of About Good.
G4=GOOD a circulated coin which has heavy wear. Some of the design is present, might not have a complete date present according to specific coin type, but in most cases, date must be readable.

VG8=VERY GOOD a coin which grades Very Good, will have much heavy wear but will have most main features, may lack a full rim, date may be very weak but all four digits must be present. Very small art details worn nearly smooth.

F12=FINE moderate to heavy wear, main design is outlined, only slight evidence of very small design features if any. All letters are present but may be weak at top of Letters towards the rim. Date is bold, rim must be nearly complete.

VF20-30=VERY FINE a coin in the grade of Very Fine will have some of the very small design features present although worn smooth in higher design areas. Date is sharp and bold, all letters are complete and bold. May have only a trace amount of mint luster.

EF40-45 EXTREMELY FINEa coin which grades Extremely Fine must boldly show all major features and most very small art details in the main design, hairlines etc.. Some of the very highest points of the design will show light to moderate wear. All letters and numbers are sharp and bold. Must show some of original mint luster. (Learn to check for mint luster, request advanced grading instructions as described below.

AU50-55=About Unicrulated a coin which grades About Uncirculated will have only a small trace of wear on the highest points of the main design. May lack shine but must retain at least 1/2 of original mint luster , may have slight toning due to exposure to oils in human skin .

MS60 An uncirculated coin. Even uncirculated coins will most often have much damage such as dirt and oil tarnishing. Many scuffs and deep scratcges, etc. Although the coins have bever been touched by human hands, they are exposed to much abuse during production and distribution. MS60 being of average uncirculated coin quality, several scratches, some deep. Some foreign oils or other "dirt" which the coins were exposed to during Minting. Might lack some desgin details due to poor striking or worn Coin Dies, MS60 Unicrculated Coins generaly lack eye appeal and appear dull, not shiny. (Coin Die=Coin Press, main part of the machine with which coins are produced) ( Minting=Coin production)

MS62-70 coins with a quality above that of average. The higher you go on the scale up to 70, the higher the coins Eye Apeal. Fewer nicks or scratches, striking quality has effect on MS65 or higher. Quite often coins may lack design art features, letters or numbers. Such defects prevent a coin from grading MS65 or better.(Some PRE 1921 coins may lack some of the design due to poor minting procedures during that era, so some coins prior to 1921 have grading rules which are less strict than newer dates and coin grade MS65 or better even if lacking design features)

Coin prices vary among dealers and collectors. Coin prices are changing on a constant basis. Condition or Grade of coin, Date or Mint Mark, Rarity, Metal composition, all of these factors have great impact upon a coins retail price. Also, if you sell coins to a coin dealer, you will get a smaller premium price for your coins than if you sell coins to a collector. That is just fair buisness. A coin dealer must pay wholesale prices and resell at retail to make any profit. This is a fair and common practice. If you sell coins through an online auction or classified ad, you will be selling the coins to collectors. I recommend selling coins through Teletrade online coin auctions. The banner above links to the starting point for you to sell your coins at retail prices. Scroll up and click on the banner to sell your coin, or collection of coins.
